WILLIAM ETTY AUTOGRAPH LETTER.
English artist best known for his painting of nudes.
AL. 1p. 14 Buckingham Street, Strand. Tuesday [no date]. To [Sake Dean] Mahomed.
"Mr. Etty's respects to Mr. Mahomed & begs to say that tho' his rheumatism is decidedly better, he feels as if he should not like to take his vapour bath till Saturday at three, as he has not had a good night, and does not feel strong this morning, but on Saturday at 3 he should like to have it".
Some browning to left margin and with some old mounting traces on verso. VG.
Sake Dean Mahomed (1759-1851) was an Indian surgeon and entrepreneur. He opened the first curry house in Britain and introduced "shampooing" baths, where he offered theraputic massage. These became very popular and he was appointed shampooing surgeon to both George IV and William IV. His vapour cure was advertised as being efficacious for a number of conditions, especially (as in Etty's case) rheumatic complaints, gout and stiffness of the joints.
