Sir Henry Irving was the most celebrated actor of his generation and he remained an inspirational figure to subsequent generations of actors. Bram Stoker was his secretary and amanuensis and Irving is thought to have been the model for Stoker's character, Dracula. Although the recipient of the note is not named, the letter is from a cache of letters, the majority of which were addressed to the singers, Clara Butt and her husband, Kennerley Rumford.
