SIR WALTER SCOTT Autograph Letter Cover Addressed to Robert Southey. Scottish author and poet. Letter cover signed by Sir Walter Scott and addressed in his hand to Robert Southey, Esq., Keswick.  Together with a 19th century engraved portrait by H.T. Ryall after the original painting by J.P. Knight.   The address panel excised and laid down on piece of old manuscript measures 11 x 7.5 cms (4.5 x 3 inches).  The engraving measures 23 x 18 cms (9 x 7.25 inches). Both in very good condition.   A nice association.  The two poets were friends and frequent correspondents. According to Scott's letters,.....

ANS.  On Shaw's compliments card.  Printed with his address 4 Whitehall Court, London, SW1 and the words 'with Bernard Shaw's compliments'.  Dated in his hand 3rd September 1937. To the printed text he has added "For associate membership of the Philharmonic Choir as usual £2-2-0.  Don't bother to acknowledge, cheque endorsement will suffice." Signed with initials. Card measures approx. 4.5 x 2.25 inches (11.5 x 5.5 cms). Slight mounting damage to verso, else in fine condition. George Bernard Shaw was a keen observer of all kinds of music and.....

ROBERT SOUTHEY Autograph manuscript and his Thomas Bewick bookplate. English romantic poet, one of the 'Lake Poets'. Poet Laureate from 1813 to 1843. Autograph manuscript entirely in the hand of Robert Southey being the portion relating to Maid Marian in George Wither's poem 'Inconstancy' with a pencil note at head and the number 48 in top left corner. Together with Robert Southey's bookplate, being a very fine wood engraving by Thomas Bewick and a 19th century engraved portrait by Finden.   The manuscript is on a single sheet measuring 15.5 x 10 cms (6.25 x 4 inches) and the bookplate  is.....

M. Thackeray." 12 mo.  Approx 5 x 4.5 inches (12.5 x 9 cms). Old central fold. Trimmed top and tail and with corners cropped to fit album but with no loss to text.  Mounting traces to corners of verso. A nice example of Thackeray's small, upright hand. Provenance: From the 19th century.....
