MATTHEW ARNOLD Autograph School Time-Table Signed. English poet, critic and schools inspector.  Author of the poem 'Dover Beach'. A rare and unusual model school time-table, entirely in the hand of Matthew Arnold. Endorsed signed and dated by him at foot "approved on behalf of Education Department, as fulfilling requirements of sect.vii of Elementary Education Act 1870. Matthew Arnold. November 19th [18]72."   Folio leaf 34 x 24.5 cms (13.5 x 9.75 inches).  Evidence of old mounting or binding at top edge of verso. All else fine.   A fascinating document. Matthew Arnold, the son of Rugby School's headmaster, Thomas Arnold, had.....

Jo: Socius Ejectus".On paper piece measuring approx 5 x 1.5 inches (12.5 x 4 cms).  Tipped onto larger leaf bearing the biographical details of Thomas Baker as compiled by and in the hand of Anne Susanna Nichols (1788-1853).  Some browning, else in very good condition.Thomas Baker was one of the great antiquaries of his day and the majority of his extensive collection of manuscripts is now housed in the British Library and Cambridge University.  These include books printed by Caxton and other priceless manuscripts and examples of early printing.....

To "Dear Sir" [almost certainly Thomas Miller].    "The subject of your picture by West of Clifton struck me as bearing a resemblance to one of Westmorland's waterfalls for which I had made memoranda.  You will perhaps be able to judge from the enclosed diagrams whether your picture is a Welsh or English subject.  Of course if the Skelwith Force drawing had been taken from below the chief fall,.....

To Mr Tunstall.  Integral with Tunstall's letter to William Bowyer regarding his edition of Cicero.  William Bowyer has appended his reply, from which his signature has been clipped and attached to an autograph printer's account for the editions of Anson's Voyages. Both items are sold together.The handwriting of William Bowyer has defeated us in places but the substance of the letter is as follows: "Good Sir, As Mr Thurlton is a joint adventurer with me in your work, I have referred myself.....
